The Ultimatum

“Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink… As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.”  ~ John 6:54-59

This is not what we wanted, Lord, what we expected:

God Himself becoming the Lamb to be sacrificed…

giving us His flesh to be consumed.

And this is not what we looked for, what we asked for:

the new hearts of flesh You promised would replace our hearts of stone

being crafted, being won,

by God’s death on a Cross.

This is not how we pictured it, how we imagined it would be:

You taking on the curses of our ancestors, the sinfulness of our human flesh,

and calling us into a new creation

from your opened side.

This is not what we thought it would be, what it’s supposed to look like:

instead of our enemies, you’re defeating ourselves, our sinfulness, and our denials.

And the glory of the Son of David

is not supposed to hang from a tree.

This is not what we wanted, what we looked for,

what we expected, how we pictured it would be:

Yahweh Himself literally walking among us,

a living, breathing, touchable reality

with which we now have to deal.

You have taken from us the option of indifference,

of blindness, of neutrality:

from this day forward, there are only two options:

Yes or No,

surrender or betrayal,

“This saying is too hard”, or “To Whom else could we go?”

Will we let our wants, our expectations,

our pictures,

our imaginings

our thoughts and suppositions

overwhelm our vision, and carry us away from You?

Or can we look at you, Lord

listen to you

hold on to you

long enough to remember

the day we found ourselves

and our home

within Your gaze…

To hold on to this Person

more real

than all our expectations.
